Christmas in the tropics.

This year, the sun continued to shine in Port Douglas in December, with largely night time showers, so the Christmas celebrations went ahead to the appreciation of the locals and visitors to the area.

On 20 December 2008, there was the choice of entertainment - carols and entertainment in the park near St Mary's by the Sea, much appreciated by those with kids - and a return to tradition with the Cairns Choral Society singing carols in the Daintree Lounge of the Sheraton Mirage in Port Douglas, with the hotel management really coming to the party and offering drinks and traditional fare at very reasonable prices.

The Christmas party for members of the Combined Services Club, the "Tin Shed", with its great views over the Inlet and Daintree mountains, is legendary.  This year, the Club put on a separate event for children, and dinner over 3 nights - an innovation, but some of us prefer the traditional marquee with all members present on the one occasion.

New Years Eve fireworks are another Port Douglas tradition, and again several local businesses in the vicinity of the fireworks location have provided support for this event.  With special dinners being offered by many restaurants and resorts (Sassi's at Bale, Sixieme Sense, Harrisons, Sheraton Mirage and Sea Temple amongst others) you'll celebrate the new year in style.
