PORT DOUGLAS MUST-DOs

One of the constants is the Port Douglas Sunday markets, held weekly and year-round in the park area in Wharf Street.  No matter what the time of year, there is a great ambience, with exotic fruit and vegetables from the area, and jams and juices made with these, pottery, resin and pearl jewellery, tropical clothing, plants, artwork, kids' toys.  Just wander along, enjoy the sunshine and atmosphere.  There's always something tempting to buy.

You might choose to drop by St Mary's by the Sea for the ecumenical service held at 11 a.m. on Sunday.  The view from the open windows behind the pulpit is extraordinary - sea and rainforest.

After Sunday lunch at Salsa is a worthwhile tradition! Enjoy the ever popular linquini with Tableland redclaws and sip on a margharita made with luscious local limes.

If you haven't done so for a while, take a ride on the Ballyhooley train, the converted cane train which operates on Sundays. Along the Marina, past mangroves and tropical gardens, you'll see another side of Port Douglas.

Back in town, the view from the hill of Four Mile Beach and over the Coral Sea is stunning. Only the fit should try to walk up!

Strolling along Four Mile Beach is for all fitness levels. Early in the morning is refreshing, with sea breezes, driftwood, golden sand, coconut trees enhancing the tropical atmosphere.  At the weekends there is often activity at the low-key Sailing Club - a colourful sight, and great community activity.

If you are going further afield, visit Cape Tribulation.  It's only 40 minutes drive north of Port Douglas to the Daintree River ferry, and over the river there's plenty to experience. The Madjarra Boardwalk is a "must".  Read the instructive signs, and learn more about the formation and existence of the mangroves, wetlands and rainforest.  See the gorgeous wild gardenia, found only in a small area north of the Daintree River, view the weird root canopy formation of trees.

Lunch at Whet Cafe-Bar will restore you - a relaxing spot with tasty food.
